Dowlas were appointed as Project Lead by Beckery Island Regeneration Trust to bring these historic buildings back to life.
Funded by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ Towns Deal Fund initiative (which aims to regenerate towns and deliver long-term economic and productivity growth), the £12m project sees the restoration and conversion of a 19th-century tannery and glove factory that lay derelict for over 40 years.
Significant benefits from this project include:
- Ensuring future public access and community use
- Ensuring a financially viable and sustainable future for the buildings
- Creating employment opportunities
- Adopting green principles for the build and operational phases to contribute to mitigating climate change and build resilience
- Re-use of the building structure and materials, immediately reducing the impact and carbon emissions of the construction process
- Enabling growth, whilst limiting energy use and environmental impact
- Providing local job opportunities, reducing the need to commute
- Improved quality of life
